Republic of Slovenia

Slovenia is a popular destination for tourists and an important transit country on the way to the Adriatic Sea. Visitors are attracted by its beautiful nature, the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, the Adriatic coast and historic towns.

A valid electronic e-Vinjeta linked to the vehicle registration number is required for most vehicles using Slovenian motorways and expressways.

Types of Slovenian motorway vignettes

Choose the correct Slovenian e-Vinjeta category

  • Category 1: motorcycles
  • Category 2A: standard vehicles up to 3.5 t
  • Category 2B: high vehicles up to 3.5 t with a height above the front axle exceeding 130 cm
  • Before purchasing, we recommend verifying the correct vehicle category. An incorrectly selected e-Vinjeta may not be considered valid during an inspection.

Where is a Slovenian e-Vinjeta required?

A Slovenian e-Vinjeta is required for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on most motorways and expressways in Slovenia. It is required on the following major routes, for example:

  • A1 (Ljubljana – Maribor – Šentilj)
  • A1 (Ljubljana – Koper)
  • A2 (Austria – Ljubljana – Croatia)
  • A4 and A5 (Ptuj, Murska Sobota and the Hungarian border)

Before travelling, we recommend checking whether your planned route includes sections that require a valid Slovenian e-Vinjeta.

Travelling in Slovenia: Useful Information

Before travelling to Slovenia, we recommend checking your vehicle’s mandatory equipment and basic traffic regulations in addition to having a valid e-Vinjeta.

When travelling to Slovenia, do not forget to bring:

  • a reflective vest for emergency stops (mandatory for every passenger),
  • a warning triangle,
  • a first aid kit,
  • vehicle documents and valid insurance.
  • Daytime running lights are mandatory in Slovenia.

Regular inspections on Slovenian motorways and expressways focus not only on the validity of the e-Vinjeta, but also on compliance with traffic regulations and mandatory vehicle equipment. We therefore recommend checking that you have everything prepared before your journey.

What should you pay attention to when travelling to Slovenia?

  • For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, the correct e-Vinjeta category depends on the height above the front axle. If it exceeds 130 cm, the vehicle usually falls into category 2B.
  • When travelling between Austria and Slovenia, a separate fee is charged for passing through the Karavanke Tunnel. This fee is not included in the price of the Slovenian e-Vinjeta.
  • Before completing your order, we recommend carefully checking the registration number and selected vehicle category. Incorrectly entered details may make the e-Vinjeta invalid during inspection.

Speed limits:

  • 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on expressways
  • 90 km/h outside urban areas
  • 50 km/h in built-up areas

In Slovenia, motorway, expressway and regular road sections often alternate during a journey. Pay close attention to road signs, especially around Ljubljana, tunnels, exits and routes leading to mountainous areas.

Traffic may be heavier during the main holiday season on routes leading to the coast and border crossings. It is advisable to allow extra time and adjust your speed to current road conditions.
