Slovak Republic

Slovakia is a beautiful and easily accessible country, often visited by foreign travelers – for a weekend, holiday, or simply when passing through.

When driving on Slovak motorways, it is necessary to have a valid motorway vignette – the so-called e-vignette.

Who needs an e-vignette?

  • A motorway vignette is primarily intended for passenger cars and other vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • If the total weight of a vehicle combination (towing vehicle + trailer) does not exceed 3.5 tonnes, a single motorway vignette is sufficient.
  • If the total weight of a vehicle combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a motorway vignette is required for both the towing vehicle and the trailer.
  • Motorcycles are exempt from the requirement to purchase a motorway vignette.

Where is the Slovak motorway vignette required?

The vignette is required on most sections of motorways and expressways designated as:

  • D1 (Bratislava – Žilina – Košice)
  • D2 (Bratislava – border with the Czech Republic)
  • D3, D4
  • R1, R2, R3, R4, R6 and R7

Before travelling, we recommend checking the current list of sections where a valid motorway vignette is required.

What not to forget!

In addition to the Slovak motorway vignette (e-vignette), we recommend checking the mandatory vehicle equipment.

In Slovakia it is mandatory to have:

  • a reflective vest for each passenger,
  • a warning triangle,
  • a first aid kit,
  • winter tyres when required by current weather conditions,
  • It is mandatory to keep the headlights on throughout the day.

The validity of motorway vignettes in Slovakia is checked electronically. We therefore recommend arranging everything in advance and travelling without unnecessary worries.

Slovak motorway vignette: useful information

  • A Slovak motorway vignette can be purchased with immediate validity or with a selected start date.
  • A valid motorway vignette is required before entering any motorway section where a vignette is required.
  • We recommend saving the motorway vignette registration confirmation for any future verification of details.

Speed limits:

  • 130 km/h on motorways and expressways
  • 90 km/h outside urban areas
  • 50 km/h in built-up areas

In Slovakia, motorway vignette validity is checked electronically, so there is no need to place any sticker on the windscreen.

Speed limits may be adjusted on certain sections by road signs. Always follow the current traffic signs.
